Pathways to Australian Citizenship
There are several ways to become an Australian citizen. The most common pathways include:
1. Citizenship by Conferral (Naturalisation)

➤ Have lived in Australia for at least four years, with at least 12 months as a permanent resident

3. Citizenship by Birth
Children born in Australia automatically acquire citizenship if at least one parent is an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of the child’s birth.
4. Citizenship by Adoption
For children adopted under a legal process involving at least one Australian citizen parent.
The Citizenship Test
Applicants for citizenship by conferral (naturalisation) must sit a citizenship test, which assesses your:

Study materials are provided by the Department of Home Affairs, and the test is conducted in English at approved testing centres.

Citizenship Ceremony
This is the final step in becoming an Australian citizen. During the ceremony, you pledge your loyalty to Australia and its people, values, and democratic beliefs. Most applicants receive an invitation to attend within 6 months of their application being approved.
